Walking-Tour Superiority

Walking tours are far superior to other modes-of-travel-based tours, and here’s why:

  • Segway tours are fun and speedy, but if the Segway Personal Transporter exceeds 7 kph, it will transmogrify into a pile of sand.
  • Horse-drawn carriage tours are romantic, but the horses often get too big for their britches and try to run up the sides of buildings.
  • Zipline tours are over way too quickly, not to mention that most of them send you hurtling through a bakery window.
  • Bicycle tours—if God wanted you to ride a bicycle, he would have had your mother give birth to a bicycle instead of a kid brother.
  • Helicopter tours offer a great view, but it seems like every gosh darn helicopter pilot in town has dated your sister.

Groupon, Groupon, Groupon!

Today we are featured on Vancouver’s greatest discount site; Groupon. As of 10am 117 Urban Adventures have already been sold… Should be interesting to see how many the full day will bring. I’m guessing 300 and rewarding myself $10 if I’m right.

Top 5 Secrets of Vancouver

This post is courtesy of Remy Scalza from the Inside Vancouver Blog

We all know that Stanley Park is stunning. And the Grouse Grind is amazing. And nothing beats a Saturday at Granville Island Market. But there’s a lot more to Vancouver than that. To dig deeper and find some real hidden gems in the city, I’ve enlisted the help of Urban Adventures, a unique group that offers walking, biking and hiking tours around Vancouver.

“You can do lots of tours, but not many people let you get off the beaten path like we do,” says Blaise Sack, the veteran guide who designs and leads Urban Adventures’ outings. Trips range from a two-hour tour of Gastown and Chinatown (a bargain at $25) to their newest excursion, a five-hour bike tour around Stanley Park and into Granville Island and Olympic Village ($75).

After leading hundreds of tours around the city, Blaise has accumulated a treasure trove of hidden gems. Here are some of his most coveted Vancouver secrets.

1) The Long Table Series at the Irish Heather. Located in Gastown, the Irish Heather is among the more authentic and old-school Irish pubs in the city (though it only opened in 2008).  What really sets it apart, however, are its nightly fixed-menu suppers.  Guests are seated at a single long table and served a lovingly prepared Irish meal – like braised beef shortribs with roast parsnips.  Meals come with a beer and are a bargain ($12 most nights).

2) Hill’s Native Art. While the Bill Reid Gallery may be more famous, Hill’s Native Art in Gastown is the continent’s largest Northwest Coast Aboriginal art gallery.  The first floor is jam-packed with masks, totem polls and other carvings, but the real showpieces are tucked away on the third floor, where few shoppers ever bother to look.

3) ChocolaTas on Granville Island. Located in the Public Market, this gourmet chocolate shop is where master chocolatier Wim Tas works his magic.  Tas emigrated from Belgium in 2002, where he was trained at Maison Wittamer, the exclusive supplier of chocolate to the Belgian royal family.  Chocolates are made by hand using fresh ingredients and incorporating unique flavors including Tuscan hazelnuts, Iranian pistachios, Provençal orange peel and Champagne.

4)The Mill at Coal Harbor. On a sunny afternoon, there’s few better places to grab a beer than The Mill Marine Bistro, which boasts Vancouver’s largest outdoor patio.  The setting on Coal Harbor – with views of the Burrard Inlet, North Shore mountains and float planes circling in for a landing – makes the patio even more special.

5) The Hang Out Place on Granville Island. This small shop on Granville Island specializes in selling hammocks – from beautifully woven Mayan and Brazilian hammocks to utilitarian camping and backpacking varieties.  But their real claim to fame is their own invention: a chair hammock dubbed “The Hang Out.” The innovative design – with the hammock itself suspended from a cross bar – makes for an incredibly comfortable lounging experience.  It’s “perhaps the greatest invention since egg chairs from the ’70s,” says Blaise from Urban Adventures.

Vancouver’s Newest Whitecap!

A fantastic addition to the physical abilities (and physical appearance) of the Vancouver Whitecaps – Kendra Flock is the new striker that really packs some punch in the Whitecaps line-up. Kendra Flock WhitecapsI had the chance to sit down with Kendra and discuss her new move to Vancouver. Here are some of her remarks…

Q: Are you a Vancouverite?

“Well, I’m working on it.. I grew up in Calgary, so the first thing to mention is that I’m a Flames fan…  I was living in Victoria going to Uvic before coming to Vancouver and absolutely love BC. I really haven’t experience to much of Vancouver yet, but am excited to be in the city where there appears to be so much going on.”

Q: What do you do outside of Soccer?

“I love being outdoors. So anything that involves being outside and being active I am always game for. I’m very social and love being with my close friends and meeting new ones. So if your readers are from Vancouver pass along my info because I need to expand my Vancouver horizons! Just kidding… But seriously…”

Q: Do you have a Blackberry or an Iphone?

“Iphone”

Whitecaps Kendra FlockQ: What is your favourite punctuation mark?

“Interesting question? Exclamation mark maybe? Or ‘double brackets.’ Although they don’t exist my hilarious friend created them. They are used to add a bracketed note onto an already bracketed note… An example would be: Vancouver has about 2 million people (8 of which I know) ((2 of which I like…)). Doesn’t make sense but my friend is crazy.”

Thanks Kendra – Glad to have you in Vancouver!

Have Questions for Kendra? Feel free to send us an email and we’ll pass them along.

Twitter Bug Resets Followers

Twitter Bug Resets Followers
from Vancouver Blog Miss 604 by Rebecca Bollwitt by Miss604

Twitter was experiencing the effects of a bug this weekend that exploited the following/follower method (as this post on Mashable explains). This morning, as an after effect of this bug, all users have noticed their following and follower numbers have dropped right down to zero. This means the little corner store down the block has the same follower count as Ashton Kutcher or CNN at the moment.

twitter bug

I’m certain Twitter is working to rectify the problem and it’s not something permanent as timelines are still filling with updates. However, things like this always seem to cause panic, mass hysteria, and the inevitable shouting at inanimate objects such as a computer screen or iPhone. To alleviate some stress in the future, here are a few ways you can back up your Twitter account.

Backupify
John Biehler clued me into the Backupify service a few months ago and it can be used to archive and back up your accounts from Twitter to Flickr, Delicious, Google Docs, WordPress, Blogger, and Facebook. The very basic service is free (although they do have premium options) so there’s sanity to gain from simply singing up.

Backup My Tweets
The Backup My Tweets service will back up your Tweets since they have a limited shelf-life on Twitter.com. It doesn’t back up your followers as Backupify does, but it will provide you some peace of mind. There is a program you can download for your PC that will backup your friends however I have not tried this so I cannot guarantee its security.

The best thing anyone can do right now is wait this out. Do not go on a mass re-following spree as I can only imagine this would muck up any backups or restoration process they might have Twitter has posted an update saying they have suspended following until this is resolved. Stay tuned to Mashable.com or @Mashable for updates since they have been crowned the most influential account on Twitter (well, at least up until this morning).

Update All is right with the world. From the official Twitter account: “Follow bug discovered, remedied. Read our status blog for details. http://bit.ly/dhQ3fF“.

Vancouver Sun Run 2010K

Another successful year for the Vancouver Sun Run. An estimated 50,000 people crowed the downtown streets of Vancouver, each with a personal goal to achieve. Some were there to win, some were there to finish, and some were there to enjoy the live music and sunshine that really made the day extra special.

A special thank you to all those amazing volunteers. I was never more relieved to see them at each hydration station. My strict training regiment of “not running” and meticulous diet of “random junk food” ensured that today’s 10 k felt more like a Mt. Everest accent.

Grey Whale in False Creek!

A Grey Whale went for it’s own cruise up false creek all the way to science world yesterday. Some lucky onlookers caught a glimpse of the whale around noon. Apparently the whale was looking for food in the shallow waters of False Creek. But personally, I think it was trying to make an appearance on the False Creek Ferry ride portion of our Granville Island & Downtown Core Tour. Sorry Mr. Whale, you were two hours late. Lesson of the day: Whales aren’t very punctual!

First Sun Burn of 2010!

Blaise Sack Kiteboarding

Blaise Sack

Nothing like a good sun burn to indicate summer’s on the doorstep! With a brand new kiteboarding set-up and the wind upwards of 20 knots Jericho served as the perfect  play ground. Over 30 Kites were flying that day and most of them, like me, stayed out for over 5 hours straight. Let’s just say, after 5 hours on the water, in the sun, “sans” sunscreen – me and a ripe tomato had a lot in common.

Vancouver is truly one of a kind. How many cities can you be kiteboarding in the ocean with beautiful scenic views of our north shore snow capped mountains?… And still get a sun burn! I’d like to thank Vancouver and Jacek who captured some of these amazing shots. Jacek was poised on a protruding sandbar capturing one of many amazing sights in Vancouver.
